Description:
The Iron Curtain coming down has left many deserted military airports all over Europe. Back then the Russian army also packed up their stuff in the Czech city Hradec Králové (Königgrätz). Lots of gras grew over the hangars – until August 2005. Then the Hip Hop Kemp took over the orphaned premises in the spirit of "Mics instead of MIGs". Initially the festival, which originated in the neighboring town Pardubice in 2002, moved to Silber Lake near Hradec Králové in 2004 because of the increasing number of spectators. This venue however wasn’t a match for the rush of the fans either. Thanks to improved advertising, more and more fans from Germany also journied to the Czech Republic. Fortunately the old military airport in Hradec Králové was only waiting to be appointed a useful purpose: On August 19th, 2005 Masta Ace and Inspektah Deck from the Wu-Tang Clan, amongst others, replaced the Russian generals as tenants. Due to the convincing line-ups, the attendance kept increasing in the following years and in 2008 the organizers wanted to break through the 20,000 mark with The Roots and Kool Savas as the driving force. There’s still a lot of leeway for more – another move shouldn’t have to take place for a while, thanks to the spacious former military compound.
