Berlin Festival: Fear of mass panic

Twelve hours of splendid program already lay behind the fans at the sold-out Berlin Festival this past Friday (September 10th), when the situation toppled, and the happening on the inoperative airport Tempelhof had to be cut short ahead of time at 2:30 am. The reason was an immense back-up of fans in the gateway towards the stage at hangar 4, who wanted to see the performances of the main acts Fatboy Slim and 2manyDJs. The resulting dynamic amongst the visitors in the gateway and on the festival grounds led to the joint decision of the organizers and the police, to cut the Berlin Festival short for security reasons. Against the background of the events at the Loveparade in Duisburg, where 21 people died on July 24th, those responsible didn't want to take a risk. This was the case, even though the security concept for the capital's festival, which was agreed on with the police and the public authorities in the run-up to the event, worked as planned throughout the main stage program and the situation in Berlin remained under control at all times.

The unexpected changes on Friday also had consequences for the Saturday: the program on the second festival day was concluded on all stages at 11 pm. The cancelled acts are supposed to be performing in Berlin at a different point in time, and the planning for this is underway. For this reason visitors should defnitely keep their festival wristbands. The Berlin Festival will again be taking place next year, but will be extended time and location wise.
